Please tell us briefly about your interest in transformative learning
I am deeply interested in how and why people change. My research and practice include factors affecting belief and identity formation, as well as the impediments to shifts in each. At some point I became fascinated with Mezirow's concept of the disorienting dilemma and the ways in which such events create an opening for re-imagining concepts of self and entertaining possibilities of action. Both my clients and I have experienced such dilemmas and resulting life changes.
As a former biochemist and med school student, I am also intrigued by findings from neuroscience that corroborate the theory that the brain and person are constantly sculpting one another. I am curious about how this might motivate people to learn and behave differently, with the goal of self-actualization and empowerment.
